“She Looks Right Through Me” Frustrated that his mom is still pushing for him to apply for the WIBLES scholarship (Women In Business Leadership Entrepreneurial Society), Joe retreats to his room. He laments that his mother, who has been a support and inspiration his whole life, looks right through him to the girl he never truly was.

"Regular Joe - Overture" The show opens as a montage of Joe's daily life, shifting scenes with the music, Joe always center stage as the world flows around him.

"All You Can Be is You" Having agreed to meet best friend Mel at the coffee shop where his crush Vicki is working, Joe turns to his imaginary father figure...A 1950s-60s style crooner/movie star in the form of a poster on his wall, for a pep talk. His idol comes to life and reflects Joe's own thoughts back to him. All he can be is himself!

"Capitol Hill" It's the Alliance Cabaret! Mel and the ensemble perform this homage to the counterculture of the 1980s/90s in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, and particularly Seattle's 1992 Pride, which was the first in the country to include the "T" in LGBT. No other city followed for three years.

"My Tuxedo" After the Alliance Cabaret, Mel has dismissed all the other performers and finishes cleanup alone. Having received many compliments on his tuxedo, he struggles with why it...and his identity...still feel so uncomfortable. He feels he's only accepted when he shows others what they want to see, not who he truly is.

"It's the Beginning" Joe is in his room, preparing for his first date with Vicki while Kate is in the main room, preparing for her first date with Walter. Both share similar nervous feelings and excitement for the possibilities. Joe's pseudo father-figure idol poster cheers him on.

"What Would Be the Harm?" Joe's mom, Kate, pesters him yet again about the WIBLES scholarship (Women In Business Leadership Entrepreneurial Society). To his horror, he finds she's filled it out for him. He tells her to delete it and leaves. Kate, wanting desperately to help her kid, talks herself into completing the application. After all, what would be the harm? She hits 'send.'

"How Could I Have Missed This?" Mel has the sudden epiphany that she has been feeling uncomfortable all her life because she is actually a transgender woman and not a man at all! Joe, who has known for some time, is thrilled for her. They celebrate in Mel's egg-cracking scene!

“He Took Me Dancing” Joe's mother, Kate, is about to go on another date with her long-time friend and coworker, Walter. Joe realizes that Kate and Walter have gotten past the dreaded third date. Kate confesses that Walter, not her usual type, has truly surprised her in the most wonderful ways.

“Siren Song” The WIBLES scholarship committee is meeting and it’s Kate’s turn to host! With wine and snacks in hand, they swap stories about various challenges they’ve faced as women and ridiculous lines they’ve heard from men. Kate takes on the role of the indomitable Sea Witch with her chorus of sirens as they celebrate the power of women’s voices raised together!

"You Look Right Through Me" Everything comes to a head when the WIBLES scholarship committee meets at Joe's house. The president tells Kate that Joe's application has made it through to the interview round. They press Kate to bring Joe out so they can congratulate "her" and schedule the interview. Kate, who thought she'd have more time to broach the subject, brings Joe out, hoping he'll just go along with it. But it is the breaking point, and Joe finally confronts Kate publicly, grabs a few things from his room, and leaves home.

"A New Beginning" (reprise) Joe accidentally overhears Kate talking with Walter about her therapy sessions and is surprised and touched by how far she's come in her thinking and how hard she's been working after her past mistakes. Joe wonders if he can trust her again while Kate hopes she'll be able to be the mother he needs and deserves. Walter, knowing Joe is eavesdropping, cheers them both on and hopes for a reconciliation.

“Kate’s Promise” After over a month with no contact, Joe agrees to meet with Kate at the Alliance Cabaret. Kate has done a lot of thinking and has been doing the hard work in therapy. Realizing how wrong she has been, and how much she hurt her son, she offers her sincere apology and makes a promise to support Joe as he deserves going forward. They reconcile.

"Medusa" Mel opens the next Alliance Cabaret, introducing herself to her chosen family as Brook for the first time! She joyfully tells the audience to, "Be loud, take up space! Love who you love and love who you ARE, and don't take any shit from anybody!"
